Use it Up Tip: Bread
If the ends of your loaves go uneaten (as they do at my house) or you have bread that’s gone dry, make it into breadcrumbs! Simply toss dry (but not stale) bread into a food processor or blender and grind it up. Store in an air tight container in your pantry.
- Be sure the bread is dry (but not stale). If it’s still a little moist, be sure to dry it out in the oven. Place bread in a single layer on a baking sheet. Bake at 300F for about five minutes; flip bread over, and repeat. You can also dry out bread in a brown paper bag.
- To save up bread to make breadcrumbs in a larger batch, simply toss the dry bread into a freezer-safe bag and save until you have a quantity worth grinding up in to breadcrumbs.
- Mixing up different types of bread adds flavor and texture to your breadcrumbs.
- Add dried spices to the breadcrumbs, if desired. I like to add Italian seasoning to our breadcrumbs.
- If you don’t have a food processor or blender, you can grind up your breadcrumbs by placing the dried bread in a sealed plastic bag and rolling over it with a rolling pin.
